Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called for intensifying efforts in the final stage of the campaign to secure victory for the socialist forces and their allies in the September 26 congressional elections.

The president reiterated the need to preserve a qualified majority in the National Assembly to block opposition attempts to overthrow, by any means necessary, the government and the process of change known as the Bolivarian Revolution, before the end of the current presidential period or during the 2012 elections.

"They are planning, in this way, for the march towards socialism to stop, and to turn Venezuela once again into a gringo colony," the president emphasized in his weekly Sunday column, Las Líneas de Chavez.

He also stressed the need to develop a successful offensive for Sunday, September 26, when more than 17 million Venezuelans are eligible to vote for their representatives in the legislative power.
